Apologies for cross posting …
http://www.dit.ie/about/grangegorman/
We are writing the architectural brief for our new library = 10,000 sq.
metres to house 350,000 books plus print journals plus 1,600 user seats.
It is likely to be in 2 or 3 linked buildings of 3-5 stories each.
We are faced with some fundamental design decisions and would welcome
information, please, from libraries elsewhere:
(1) Do you distribute books in a simple single Dewey/LC sequence or do
you shelve them in broad subject areas regardless of classification
number e.g. arts, sciences, social sciences.
(2) How do you distribute books and journals and user seats e.g. on
separate floors or intermixed on the same floor?
(3) What is your ratio of user seats (a) individual versus group table
and (b) open spaces versus group study rooms?
(4) How many group study rooms do you have? Of what sizes e.g. 4 or 6 or
10 or other seats?
(5) Do you have a single library enquiry/help desk or several? If
several, what is their rationale? And are staff offices nearby or at a
distance?
We are particularly interested to hear from libraries that have changed
some or all of their layouts/practices or are thinking of doing so.
Links to floor plans, user guides or other easily-available information
would be welcome also.
