A QMiP sponsored event- Getting Qualitative Research Funded facilitated by
Prof Wendy Stainton Rogers
Aston University 15th October 2009, 13:00-16:00, room G8
Lunch will be available from 12.00
If you are a psychologist doing – or getting into doing – qualitative research
and you want to get funding for it, then this workshop is for you. Equally it will
be useful if your planned project will use a mixed-methods design.
At a time when many funders are more comfortable with evaluating
quantitative designs, the focus of this workshop will be on how to:
• Justify why a qualitative approach is the right way to address your
research question(s)
• Explain how the benchmarks for ‘good research’ are different for
qualitative research – and how your project design will successfully meet them
• Describe the nature of the data you will obtain, how it will be
interpreted, and what outcomes can be expected (and for whom)
• Outline how these outcomes can be used and applied, and what
benefits they will offer to whom.
The workshop is intensive and ‘hands-on’, based around a series of activities
including: the assessment of bids and criteria for success; writing convincing
proposals and summaries; effective presentation of qualitative research
questions and aims; budgeting and justifying requirements specific to
qualitative research; getting good advice and support (including from
funders); networking and working collaboratively.
If you take part, you should expect to come away with more confidence in
yourself and your competence in bidding for funding, an outline plan (with
systematically scheduled deliverables) for preparing a funding bid, and
a ‘buddy’ to offer mutual feedback, monitoring of their plan and support to get
it completed on time.
Homework
You will be expected to do about 2 hours preparation before the session.
Materials for this will be provided when you register.
There is no charge for the workshop for QMiP members. Places are strictly
limited.
The workshop will be preceeded by the QMiP AGM, to which all members are
