MRC Epidemiology Unit, Cambridge 
Post-doctoral or post-Masters research positions in physical activity, transport and health

The MRC Epidemiology Unit undertakes research on the causes and prevention of diabetes and obesity, including - under the auspices of the Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR) - developing and evaluating interventions to change population physical activity patterns. We are now seeking two researchers to join our team working on the interdisciplinary quasi-experimental study Commuting and Health in Cambridge, with a focus on measuring, evaluating and understanding the impacts of new transport infrastructure on active travel, physical activity and public health. These posts provide opportunities to work on existing data, to develop new research ideas and projects, and to establish collaborative links both within the MRC and across institutional and disciplinary boundaries.

Post 1. Ref EPID09/491. Post-Doctoral Scientist (three years fixed term). You will be the lead quantitative public health researcher on the study, taking primary responsibility for the collection and analysis of physical activity and other quantitative data from an established cohort of participants. You will be a post-doctoral scientist who has either recently completed doctoral studies or is moving into a new research discipline. A background in epidemiology, physical activity or public health would be an advantage.
  
Post 2. Ref EPID09/492. Research Associate (two years fixed term). You will be the lead qualitative researcher on the study, taking primary responsibility for the collection and analysis of interview and other qualitative data from an established cohort of participants. You will have a Masters degree or doctorate and experience of qualitative research. A background in public health or a related social science would be an advantage.

Both posts are available from January 2010. The starting salaries will be in the range of £25,622 - £31,358 per annum. This is supported by a flexible pay and reward scheme. These posts offer 30 days' annual leave and an optional MRC final salary Pension Scheme.
