Please allow me to clarify;
I am not questioning/criticising BCS's competence level and I apologise
if you have interpreted my email as such, but as your name suggests
(British Computer Society) would lead me to believe you are primarily IT
focussed/led.
Given the mounting of evidence over the years of why Information
Governance (IG) does not belong in IT, would also lend itself why, in my
opinion, the IG profession should not belong to an IT body.
IT is invaluable in enabling the business requirements of an
organisation and plays an equal part to IG in working together and
delivering a complete solution. One cannot be successful without the
other.
Many thanks

Hello Trish
(and others who have expressed criticism of BCS on this listserve this
week)
Thanks for your interesting comments, but I am unclear why you
percieve that BCS members may be less competent than those of
CILIP or SOA.
As you probably already know, BCS has a large membership (50,000 if
we include overseas members) working in diverse fields across the
profession of Information and Technology. As well as a network of
regional groups, there are well-represented specialist interest groups -
for example Data Management, Information Management, Business
Information Systems, Health Informatics and Project Management.
Members may join the society at entry level or Associate, progress
through Professional Member and after minimum 5 years appropriate
experience attain Chartered status. Membership grades are
dependant upon clearly demonstrated competence (the framework
SFIA is publically available). Members are supported by a network of
voluntary mentors and are invited to join those special interest groups
that best reflect their career or professional interests. All members
are
regulated by the BCS Code of Conduct.
The Society has charitable status, a paid executive augmented by
voluntary commitees and working groups, and the Royal Charter. The
BCS executive has been active in lobbying government and industry
(recent examples around data sharing and identity card proposals) is
regularly engaged in legislative consultation.
I could go on to mention the extensive website and published
textbook resources the BCS produces, but I am conscious of taking
excess space on this listserve. I would just mention the Personal Data
Guardianship Code, a quality document with recommendations now
being widely adopted by organisations.
Prior to this week's listserve correspondence, I had always believed a
core strength of the Information Managment field was the fact that we
had a rich profession, where members of different specialisms and
generalists mutually respected each other and worked together to the
best service of our clients. Information Management is not really
unique in this sense; there are four bodies recognised for registering
accountants, for example.
While I continue to watch the listserve postings with interest, and
have volunteered for the group Bryan Parker is chairing, I would just
urge some restraint. Do we really want to move our profession closer
to a 'closed shop' with only limited professional and awarding bodies
permitting entry? Would that really enhance the service we provide to
our clients, customers and end users of the information we manage?
