Spring
September's earlier dawns,
their new-tuned birdsong,
wake me earlier, more hopefully,
announcing spring imperatives:
when courting birds swoop low
overhead, do keep out of their way.
This moulting dog-hair,
let the birds have it,
for the nests they’re building.
Note the spread of apple blossom
from one orchard area
to the next and the next.
Urge the park snails
on their epic journey
over asphalt path
past predatory birds
to fresh green salads,
safer breeding ground.
Spring showers – welcome
ambivalently - meagre
while dams are empty,
yet enough to restore
the burnt hills from last summer,
readying to burn again.
In these later dusks - glow
slow-fading, shadow
warmer - walk further, later.
