The EMPHASIS seminar on early modern philosophy and history of science, held in the School of Advanced Study, London, begins its seventh series on Saturday 3 October, when Dr Steve Walton (Pennsylvania State University and Leverhulme Visiting Professor, Leeds) will give a paper on ‘Practical Mathematics and the Military Gentleman’.
Other speakers this year include: Pamela H. Smith, John Henry, Richard Serjeantson, William Poole, Rhodri Lewis, Wouter Hanegraff, Sophie Weeks, Cesare Pastorino, Kathryn Murphy, Anthony Ossa-Richardson, Peter Jones, Jennifer Rampling and Elizabeth Scott-Baumann. This year there will be three multi-speaker colloquia on Mediaeval Alchemy, Francis Bacon and Early Modern Heterodoxies.
