We had a similar issue with pdflush and NFS under heavy load; you can

In the event it turned out to be a problem in some patch that CERN
applies to the SLC4 kernel; for us the solution was to move to SL4,
but I know that other sites have asked CERN for an (un)patched kernel
and lived happily with that.
