If you want a long(er) answer, I'd suggest something like dcmtk.
(apt-get install dcmtk on ubuntu/debian) then you can do things like
this to get the patient name:
$ dcmdump --search 0010,0010 file.dcm
use dcmdump by itself to get an idea of dicom fields that you might
have at your disposal in your DICOM files.
