I've was taught perspective as "things appear smaller the further away from
you they are" enough said
Why do they want to learn perspective? (do they have to)
I've always associated perspective with a rationalist, mathmatical,
objective way of perceiving. Its from the renaissance and all about single
fixed viewpoints and an egocentric individual world view etc. It's also sort
of what cameras do.
So I've always taught that there are various ways of investigating 3d on a
2d surface. That perspective is a renaissance system for creating an
illusion and if students want to know more about it they can go and look it
up. - Colin Hayes "the complete guide to painting and drawing" is good (page
16.)
good luck
