Hi John,
I'd suggest you might look at "The Merchant of Prato" by Iris Origo. I read
it years ago and was struck at the time by the detail of the division of the
town - more upper and lower as I remember but the principal might be
interesting. It documents the 14th century so on the cusp of the Renaissance.
