If you are thinking of using the Gewa Control Prog & the user is competent
you may need nothing else in terms of software.
You can trigger Prog commands on a PC via:
1) Gewa's own software
2) Send_ir
3) "echo !S nn rr > comX" where nn =key number, rr = repetitions and comX =
com port value ie com17
Items 2 & 3 can then be triggered via
1) desktop\folder shortcuts or via assigned hotkeys to shortcuts ie
ctrl-alt-l for lamp
2) links in programmes such as PowerPoint
3) hyperlinks
The individual can then use their preferred programme to do this
The Prog can also be used standalone as a backup device if the PC is down.

In this case I'm looking at PC because he's a heavy PC user for the rest
of his life. IMHO he would need a backup ECS to cope with control
elsewhere in the house, when the PC crashes or becomes unuseable because
of virus etc.
If you were to provide purely PC based EC would you allow use for
internet etc? & therefore would you fund & install antivirus software?
I recently spent an evening with Symantec remotely removing viruses from
my new laptop after McAfee died & my grandson's relentless search for
Sonic the Hedgehog picked up much more besides!
It brings the situation closer to that where vocas are being used for EC
- they are not supported by EC suppliers & need to be returned to base
for repair & therefore can't be relied upon. Opportunities for the next
NHS ECS contract?

Intersting discussion re PC based EC control.
My initial assessment of the Tira and Gewa control star led me to adopt
the Gewa control star as my preferred IR transmiiter. The Tira appear to
be less reliable which I put down to poor transmissions of IR signals.
The Gewa Prog 3 obviously is less of a concenr because of the batteries
in it but it is a bit bulky and more expensive.
I like the grid for developing pages of IR commands. It pretty straight
forward.
Up to this point we typically would be only taking a PC approach to EC
when there were also AAC requirements, however...... bespoke PC
(probably tablets or palm tops) EC controllers is some thing I have been
musing about for a while. Legistically it is more intersting where NHS
EAT services are providing direct support to clients. It would be
intersting to hear the views of the EC contractors however. The cost of
the base PC device is also coming down which make it more realistic. The
pace of development of commercialy available kit gives me concerns
reagrds long term support.

I am sure that Paul's advice regarding phone numbers; that is, to nest
commands within cells is best from a Grid perspective, but that would
preclude the opportunity to use the Prog to dial in standalone mode (or
via w/c joystick if he's so independent)?

The Grid 2 works with Prog III and Control Prog.
Multiple codes are best handled by programming a cell to send a series
of codes in separate commands.
