Dear All,
We are seeking advice on duplicating a collection (c.2000 items) of historic
photographic negatives (nitrate and acetate bases), some of which are
showing signs of deterioration (cockling, yellowing, softening emulsion,
silvering, fading).
We are considering both analogue and digital reproduction methods for
preservation. In order to facilitate project and budgetary planning, we would
like to hear of any experiences you have had with suppliers accustomed to
dealing with the implications of such historic collections.
We would also like to explore the Low-Cost option of re-deploying staff for in-
house digitisation. Currently we would view this as simply allowing access to
the images whilst the originals go into cold storage and we can form a longer
term plan for duplicating selected images for preservation. Any advice about
suitable equipment and software (which needn't be high end?) would be
gratefully received.
We would also like to hear of any other issues that you believe we should
consider.
Responses can be shared with list members.
Many thanks in anticipation.
