Reports to: Senior Biostatistician, Clinical Research Support Centre
MAIN PURPOSE:
To provide statistical expertise to the Clinical Research Support
Centre (CRSC) team to ensure that the Centre can advise on and conduct
high quality clinical research in partnership with researchers in
Northern Ireland, UK, Ireland and elsewhere.
JOB SUMMARY:
This is a permanent full-time post within the Clinical Research
Support Centre in Belfast, where you will join a team of four full
time statisticians. The Centre is also involved in research projects
based throughout the United Kingdom and beyond.
The CRSC has provisional registration as a UK Clinical Trials Unit,
the only such unit in Northern Ireland. As well as supporting
clinical trials, the Centre provides the full range of support for
research in Health & Social Care (HSC) across the whole of Northern
Ireland, and has a remit to provide training in research methods for
health and social care research workers.
The CRSC is a partner within the All-Ireland Cooperative Oncology
Research Group, which is a clinical trials group involved in both
national and international cancer studies.
The wide range of disciplines, disease areas, and types of studies
that are supported by the CRSC provide the Centre’s statisticians with
excellent opportunities to develop their skills and interests, and to
increase their exposure to a variety of statistical methodologies.
Participation in the CRSC workshop series provides the opportunity to
develop teaching and presentation skills.
Further training and attendance at relevant courses and conferences
are strongly encouraged. The statistical computer programs used in the
Centre are SPSS, Stata, and R.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
1. BSc (Hons) at 2.1 or above in Statistics or Mathematics with
Statistics.
A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the application of statistical
methods in an academic, statutory or health service environment
2. Ability to demonstrate practical use of information technology
systems, in particular a variety of statistical software applications,
and Microsoft office packages including Word, PowerPoint and Excel, e-
mail and the internet
3. Possess good organisational and administrative skills
4. Ability to communicate effectively (both orally and written) with
professional and non-professional staff within the health service and
external agencies
5. Demonstrate an ability to manage workload effectively
6. Ability to lead and to work as part of a team
7. Willingness to travel
8. Willingness to work flexibly to meet the needs of the job
DESIRABLE CRITERIA:
1. Higher Postgraduate qualification in Statistics
2. Chartered statistician status
3. Experience in the conduct of clinical trials or epidemiological
research
4. Generation of research ideas as evidenced by success in grant
applications and publication in peer reviewed journals
5. Experience of teaching at tertiary education level
6. Sound knowledge of both national and local clinical research
legislation including Good Clinical Practice Guidelines and research
governance
7. Supervisory Experience
