Re:

Re Google - this statement touches on the various issues surrounding the relative values of power searching and structured indexing which concern ALL information professionals and are debated by both records managers, information managers, archivists and librarians. More evidence of our shared interests!
I am obviously in disagreement with Robert's statement, especially as all Librarians have a degree or masters degree in Information/Library Management and those who are Chartered have had to undergo formal processes to achieve their qualification.

Hi -
My two pence worth - [written in a hurry]
My View
I fully believe in Accreditation and I support Peter K's note re ICRM (an
organisation which I believe has strong links to ARMA, AIIM and others. I am
taking their accreditation exams and have passed four out of six. I may be the
only person in the UK doing this. I believe that 'we' - ['we' in the RMS] - will
finish up merging with the ICRM [why not?] and that we should only have
accreditation by examination.
I quite like Steve Bailey's posting today but think it could go further faster -
it's too measured.
My reasoning is -
I came to the ICRM precisely because I wanted a formal career accreditation.
[hopefully with an international element]. I still support the RMS - which I
believe in fully and support - but they need to appeal to a broad audience and
consequently the membership demographic is a bit 'watered down' [i.e.
['unfocussed'].
I had previously been with the SoA but left because [four years or so ago]
they appeared to have little relevance to the emerging information age.
From my experience working on 'Information Competences', the idea
of 'Librarians' re-branding themselves as 'Information anythings' should be
resisted - at least without evidence of an exam. Has 'Google' effectively pulled
the rug from under that profession?
My exasperation was further compounded attending a meeting with an 'IT
professional' who produced the ITIL definition of 'Information and
competences!'
This was all further compounded by trying to roll out EDRMS : when we went
to a new client, how many times was it 'Records ? oh that's ..... they've been
doing it for thirty years'!.
Examinations please.
