Subject: Information Literacy competences for service users in
Nursing, Midwifery, Health and Social Care
Apologies for cross-posting
Dear colleague
The RCN has recognised the need for competences in this area to
complement its clinical competence framework by helping nurses,
midwives, healthcare assistants and nursing students develop their
skills in using information and knowledge. We decided to use the
Australian and New Zealand Information Literacy Framework and
customise it to the nursing family. We are now at the stage where we
need to consult with external stakeholders with a view to seeking
subsequent accreditation with the RCN Accreditation unit http://www.rcn.org.uk/development/learning/accreditation
.
The unique selling point of these competences is that they link in
with the RCN’s competency and career framework and are relevant to the
needs of nursing and midwifery. We have also developed scenarios that
illustrate how the competences can be used in practice. These
scenarios would form part of supporting material for our members
whilst the competences would sit on the public area of our website
with a link from the Information & Knowledge Management web pages.
These documents can be accessed via buttons in the survey itself. The
survey is open from 15/ 9/09-2/10/09 at 5 pm. Please click on the
