Dear Listmembers,
As my posts are being blocked on Britarch, you might like to hear of
the incredible situation that is unfolding with Odyssey Exploration
and HMS Victory and being reported in the US press, but not UK. see
for example
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gp_U3BxS9aYjUf3TdmSCRfnAroDAD9APSN680
While not being an expert on the law of the sea, OE have been rewarded
to the tune of $160,000 for removing cannons off the seabed of a UK
sovereign warship, HMS Victory. This establishes that the UK
government have accepted that the wreck is HMS Victory, that sank in
1744 (and OE in dropping their claim accept this as well). It seems
that a deal has been done (judging from OE carefully worded statement)
for them to do further work on the site, and if the precedent of this
arrangement holds, they will be rewarded by 80% of the proceeds.
Clearly this is share-holders expectations (the shares rose 14% on the
news)
This seems to be a very serious ethical situation; the UK government
have consistently refused to the sign the UNESCO convention and
perhaps one can now see why!
best
