Henrik,
The problem with the Sol-X is that it deteriorates, requires
maintenance especially the water cooling circuit and is expensive. I have a
graphite monochromator tuned to Cr radiation that would reduce the
background as much as the Sol-X detector but would also diminish the peak
intensities by a factor of 4. This sounds sever but, with about 99% or the
background removed, even the smallest peaks are easily visible. This is the
more common method for reducing the background and is very reliable. The
crystal never deteriorates and there is no maintenance. The only problem is,
I am not certain the monochromator I have can be adapted to a D8. We are
consultants for Bruker and have started to work on D8s but haven't had the
opportunity to test our monochromators for fit. The cost of the
monochromator is $4,500.00. If this is within your budget, could you send a
picture of the detector arm of your D8 with the scintillation detector
removed? I have D500s diffractometers available and could run one of your
samples with and without the monochromator installed for reference using a
use Cr tube.

James,
Thank you. I'm working in company which produce tool and special steels and
we used Bruker D8 on this steel samples. We wish to reduce background from
the steel matrix in our analysis.
Now we used scintillation detector and Cr Kalpha radiation. When work with
powder samples or thin films or other alloys like Cu, Al, Pb the results are
ok. In the attached file is pattern of 12% Cr steel with retained austenite
from the bulk sample (metallographic sample).
Background is to high. Do you think that the SOL-X detector is suitable to
reduce this background or maybe is graphite monochromator the better
solution.
Best regards,
Henrik
