Evaluation of current activities and policy development for BBSRC Media Office - your chance to learn about how the media works and contribute to major projects.
£21,098 pa Based Swindon To commence Monday 2 November 2009
This internship will suit those with a demonstrable interest in science in the media and a degree level qualification. You may have a degree in PR, journalism or a related subject and a science qualification to at least A-level or equivalent. A good understanding of how the media works is also desirable.
You will bring experience of working in an office environment and dealing with complex information to your role in the BBSRC media office. In return for your excellent organisational skills and your ability to collate, sift and analyse information you will gain insight into the strategies, tactics and challenges involved in promoting a scientific organisation and its work to the general public. This experience will prepare you for a range of careers in the fields of communication and public relations.
You will need to work on your own initiative as well as in a team. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills will be paramount in undertaking tasks for this project, as well as the ability to liaise with staff at all levels. You will be expected to be able and willing to occasionally travel off site and meet with external colleagues.

The Challenge
BBSRC's media office delivers a range of activities, including media relations, media training, email bulletin and web-based media resources. There is now a need to evaluate these areas to ensure a 'best in class' media communications function.
This project will carry out reviews to identify activities that are effective, benchmark outputs against comparable organisations and suggest policy developments for areas that would benefit from change.
Your Role
Conducting in-depth research into current communication activities, you'll develop a report for each area under review and formulate initial policy options for ongoing improvements. Experience within this field will help you to gain a good understanding of BBSRC External Relations Unit and wider issues in BBSRC's stakeholder communities.
