Thank you all for your responses. Fred was on the money when he wrote,
"It seems to be ... a poem about guilt and self-confrontation pursued in a
tentatively religious way." I come from an Irish Catholic background which
often foregrounds itself.
Off to a school this morning as a guest for National Poetry Week. One
teacher tells me her group is looking at Blake! The next two classes have a
sonnet to write for next week. I can manage to stir that one up - from
Petrarch to Halvard J in less than an hour!
