Subject: *****SPAM*****-LOW-Call for Papers: Visual Physical Discourses on
Sport and Performance Cultures
First Call for Papers
Visual Physical
Discourses on Sport and Performance Cultures
The University of Sheffield, UK
1-2 July 2010
The School of Modern Languages and Linguistics and the Faculty of Arts and
Humanities at the University of Sheffield is hosting an international
two-day conference on the Visual Physical in world cultures (European,
Hispanic, Anglo- and Lusophone, amongst others) in July 2010. We are
looking to build on our very successful 2002 'Sporting Cultures' event via a
specific focus on the visual dimension of the physical, and broadening the
disciplinary base to include sociological, historical, philosophical and
anthropological approaches to, for example, cinema, theatre, dance,
burlesque and sport-spectacle.
We would like to invite proposals for papers of 20 minutes' duration on the
visual dimension of sport, theatrical and 'leisure' performance, staging,
projection and representation. We are particularly interested in
cross-cutting discourses and less established perspectives which might
illuminate and reinvigorate our understanding of how sport and diverse
theatrical and performance arts, as well as other visual interpretations of
physical culture, embed themselves in our personal consciousness and
challenge tradition, both conceptually and methodologically. The Conference
will incorporate plenary speakers, shorter scholarly presentations and talks
from the wider sporting/performing community.
It is intended that a refereed volume of articles deriving from
presentations will be published.
For further information or to submit a proposal, please contact Dr Louise
Johnson or Dr David Wood. Proposals of 250-300 words should include name,
email, postal address and professional affiliation. The deadline for
proposals is 29 January 2010.
