The Choreodrome Lecture Series
Tuesday 25 August 7pm & Thursday 3 September 7pm
During The Place’s biennial research and development project for choreographers there
will be two given in the Robin Howard Dance Theatre on different aspects of creativity.
These lectures are designed to inspire new conversation and dialogues and are open and
free to all who wish to attend.

Tuesday 25 August 7pm
Richard Layzell
Falling Phoebe and other stories

Richard
Layzell's work encompasses many approaches to art production and audience. In 1989 he
adopted the persona of a self-promoting businessman for several weeks, and was
surprised at how much publicity this received. The media clearly respond to blatant
promotion. He's been called "one of the best artists working in Britain today" and has
worked extensively in galleries, museums, the street, and recently as an artist in
industry, in the role of 'visionaire'. His interactive installation Tap Ruffle and Shave
(1995-8) was seen by 100,000 people in 4 major cities.

As one of the 6 experienced
practitioners who make up Rescen at Middlesex University, he's been actively exploring
the creative process since 1999. As a group, they recently presented Nightwalking
(navigating the unknown), a major conference on the creative process at the South Bank
Centre in London. His ongoing work Movimento Ordinari (a global project to change the
world in small ways) has led to International Cleaning - a series of performance / video
works in Venice, San Francisco, Prague, Greece and Los Angeles.

He sees his work as
occupying a position of 'permission' - to inform, provoke, challenge, enhance, connect and
entertain. At The Place he will talk about his recent work and personal historical research
with specific reference to how narrative leads to performance and performance leads to
installation.
Thursday 4 September 7pm
Martin John Callanan
Digital Soliloquies
Martin John Callanan is Artist in Residence at UCL Environment Institute and Teaching
Fellow at the Slade School of Fine Art.

His work has included translating active
communication data into music; freezing in time the Earth¹s water system; capturing
newspapers from around the world as they are published; taming wind onto the internet;
and broadcasting his precise physical location live for over two years.

Outcomes span
experimental and traditional methods, ranging from online to print; attracting
considerable international attention among diverse audiences in the form of publications,
exhibitions, screenings and lectures. Current and future investigations centre around
metaphor in the presentation of data as information.

At The Place Martin will discuss the
role of narrative and the use of metaphor within a contemporary creative environment.
He promises that his presentation will be interesting for choreographers and dancers.

All presentations will take place at 7pm in the Robin Howard Dance Theatre at The Place,
17 Duke’s Road, London WC1H 9PY. They are free to attend and are on a first come first
served basis – no booking required! If you have any enquiries or require further
