my thoughts....
1.The man has hearing loss as evidenced by the hearing test.
2.The hearing loss is most likely caused by his work ....noise induced
3.Has a noise survey been done to quantify the noise he is exposed to
and if so what has the employer done about it to reduce/minimise
exposure? liability on the part of the
organisation....
4.Should he continue working in this environment that is damaging him?
(especially if he declines the ppe provided)
5.Health protection is our role so either the organisation reduces the
noise to acceptable levels, OR
6.The man is removed from that role and his hearing loss continues to be
managed via GP,Otologist etc
The situation should not be allowed to continue as is and the pupils
have to be made aware of this.....but this is a management issue.

Just a couple of thoughts - if he continues not to wear hearing
protection
his hearing will just get worse as the damage will continue, also, what
example is he setting to his pupils?????? It is likely that these young
people will follow his example and they will all end up with hearing
loss.
He should be wearing hearing protection.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Hearing Loss
Can anyone comment on this one please:
A 62 year old carpentry instructor is referred in with hearing loss.
His
hearing
test confirms this and i've advised he see his GP re a referral. On
questioning,
he tells me that he's worked in the building trade all his life and
thinks
that the
hearing loss has occurred over many years. He hasn't noticed it himself
but
is
aware that he always makes sure that people are facing him when
speaking.
He also tells me that he doesn't wear ear defenders so that he can hear
if
there's any problem with the machines that his pupils use.
What do people think about the fact that he's not using the ear
defenders?
Having discussed the case with colleagues, we have come up with
different
takes on the situation. If his hearing is already damaged and he's
developed
coping strategies to overcome it i.e. not wearing the ear defenders, is
he
ok
to continue working? Should we be recommending the ear defenders, in
which
case he will not be able to hear the machines and may not be safe to
continue
with his role?
Any advice would be gratefully received.
