There was indeed a long-standing German tradition of drawing wire strings
(the type of strings used on a cittern), culminating ca 1600 with Jobst
Meuler, a famous wire string maker in Nuremberg, who made strings that were
stronger than anything made earlier - and even later, until the 19th
century)
