Registration is now open for this one-day workshop focusing on live sonic
practices for silent film exhibition, which is to be held at the University
of Edinburgh on Tuesday 13th October, 2009. This event is organised as part
of the AHRC-funded Beyond Text Network, "The Sounds of Early Cinema in
Britain".
We welcome applications from postgraduate students and interested scholars
conducting research in this area and/or related disciplines. Please note
that attendance is limited, and MUST be booked in advance. We urge you to
book quickly to avoid disappointment. Registration: £10 (incl. lunch and
refreshments).
Our stellar line-up features:
Dr Stephen Bottomore, 'Professor' Mervyn Heard, Caoimhe Doyle and Jean
McGrath (foley artist and foley recordist), plus Dr Martin Parker, Yann
Seznec (aka The Amazing Rolo), and more.
Two student bursaries are available (with the kind support of the Royal
Musical Association) - these cover not only the registration fee, but can
also be used to contribute to travel and accommodation costs (particularly
useful those travelling from further afield to attend). DEADLINE for bursary
applications: 5pm, Friday 11 September, 2009.

ASSOCIATED EVENT
Please note also that - in association with the Cameo Cinema, Edinburgh - in
the early evening of 13th October we are producing a showcase of short
silent films to be accompanied by a range of the live sonic practices
explored during the workshop. We are grateful to the National Film Archive
and the Scottish Screen Archive for their assistance in curating this
programme. Further details, tbc shortly. Booking for this showcase will be
via the Cameo Cinema box office (£3/£2 conc.).
NB The registration fee for the workshop is waived for RMA (Royal Musical
Association) members - but advanced booking is still required.
