That error suggests the proxy file is corrupted. For example:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$ cp /etc/hosts /tmp/foo.$$
$ chmod 600 /tmp/foo.$$
$ grid-proxy-info -debug -file /tmp/foo.$$
ERROR: Couldn't read proxy from: /tmp/foo.26873
grid_proxy_info.c:373:globus_credential: Error reading proxy credential
globus_credential: Error reading proxy credential: Couldn't read X509 proxy
cert from bio
OpenSSL Error: pem_lib.c:637: in library: PEM routines, function PEM_read_bio:
no start line Expecting: CERTIFICATE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have a look into the file and compare it with a proxy that works.
