Post-doc scholarship at the Department of Economics, University of
Bologna (Italy)
The Economics Department of the University of Bologna will open a
competition on September 1 for a two-years post-doc scholarship
associated to the project "Understanding the nature of risk selection in
the Italian health care market: theory and empirical evidence", under
the supervision of Prof. Francesca Barigozzi.
The ideal candidate would be interested in health economics with
experience in applied econometrics (using STATA).
The project, that is briefly summarized below, will also benefit from the
cooperation of members of the Department that are active on this line
of research (Daniele Fabbri, Chiara Monfardini).
Summary of the project: Since the seminal model by Rothschild and
Stiglitz (1976), many authors tried to evaluate whether inefficiencies
caused by adverse selection should be a real concern for health
authorities or not. The empirical results provide little evidence of
adverse selection and several studies find exactly the opposite: the
level of health insurance coverage seems negatively related with
consumer risk. The aim of the project is to understand the nature of the
selection mechanism in the Italian health insurance market, taking into
account its public-private mix peculiarity. The idea is to assess
whether "advantageous selection" also occurs in Italy, to quantify this
possible phenomenon and identify its source.
