PHD STUDENTSHIP IN HEALTH ECONOMICS
"Economic analysis of the contribution of health care to health inequalities"
The Health Care Evaluation Group in the Research Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at
UCL is offering a three-year PhD Studentship in Health Economics on the topic of: "Economic
analysis of the contribution of health care to health inequalities". The studentship, which
includes payment of fees plus a full stipend, is expected to start in October 2009 and the main
supervisor will be Steve Morris, Professor of Health Economics.
See here for further details:
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/epidemiology/jobs/index.htm
The Topic:
Current evidence suggests that inadequate access to and use of health services is likely to be a
relatively minor determinant of health inequalities in England. The aim of this studentship is to
investigate this issue in more detail and attempt to quantify the contribution of health care to
health inequalities. The studentship will involve a variety of research methods but is likely to be
centred on the construction of inequality indices for health and decomposition of these using
econometric techniques.
The studentship is likely to involve individual- and area-level regression-based analyses of
datasets such as the Health Survey for England, the English Longitudinal Study of Aging, the
British Household Panel Study and Hospital Episodes Statistics.
Given the nature of the topic, students with interests and/or experience in the econometric
analysis of large datasets will be at an advantage.
The Health Care Evaluation Group:
The studentship will be based in the Health Care Evaluation Group, which is in the Research
Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UCL. The Health Care Evaluation Group is led by
Professor Rosalind Raine and the Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health is
Professor Sir Michael Marmot. Further information about the Group and the Department can be found
at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/hceg/ and http://www.ucl.ac.uk/epidemiology/.
Fees and stipend:
The studentship will cover home fees and a full stipend for three years from October 2009 or as
soon as possible thereafter. The stipend for year one (2009/10) is Ģ15,510 per annum. The stipend
will rise slightly in years two and three.
