British HCI Reinvented
HCI 2009, the 23rd BCS Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, at Churchill College, Cambridge University, 1-5 September 2009, promises to be a refreshing change for those who have tired of the limitations of traditional academic conferences.
The academic content of this year's programme ("Celebrating People and Technology") is as impressive as usual, but this year's innovations make for a much more enjoyable and enlightening experience.
The most dramatic change with the past is in the Open House event on the Wednesday evening, at which innovative displays, devices, games, communications and ubiquitous computing technologies from over 60 locally-based research labs and companies will be demonstrated and available for use. All this takes place in an informal atmosphere with food and drink readily to hand.
On Wed 2nd the opening keynote, Professor Anthony Dunne, Head of Design Interaction at the Royal College of Art and author of Design Noir: The Secret Life of Electronic Objects, while by Bill Buxton, author of Sketching User Experiences will close the conference on Fri 4th. In between are over 70 high-quality peer reviewed academic papers from around the world in a mix of presentation formats ranging from the traditional presentation style to another innovation, Encounter Sessions, at which a group of authors, within a thematic area, each give a short summary of their work before the debate broadens out to explore and exchange ideas.
Before and after the conference (on Tues 1st and Sat 5th) are a range of popular low-cost tutorials and workshops.
Registration costs have been kept low - a full ticket, including lunches and dinners is £425 for BCS and ACM members (£500 for non-members) with discounts for students. En-suite residential accommodation is also good value - it works out to £60 per night, though it should be booked as soon as possible.
For those unable to attend the full conference, tickets are available for the Open House event.
