Hi all,
I've sent something direct to Simon but if you are compiling a list of supporters please add me to it.

Hi Jaqueline,
I've sent something to Eugenie too, I thought it might help to add a student voice. Lets hope that
all this makes a difference and gets the University to see sense.
all the best
Michele

Paul
Many thanks for your response. I have contacted Eugenie Shinkle to offer my support along with the
names of academics who have already contacted me regarding this issue. I would encourage you to send
your support as an individual. I have contacted John Kippin to ask him to respond on behalf of APHE.
I think that your points are unfortunately very apt in this current climate.
I am keeping a list of those who have contacted me and will send this on to John Kippin once he has
contacted me
best wishes

Hi Jacqueline,
At Swansea we would fully support your proposal in support of Simon Burgess against this
unacceptable censorship. While many may be surprised that ‘this sort of thing still goes on’, in
some ways, as Neil has suggested, it is not uncommon. Many universities seem worried about and can
respond inappropriately to complaints often coming from students from culturally sheltered and/or
conservative backgrounds. The ‘student as client’ culture can sway the balance away from what should
be20support for lecturers who are trying to broaden the cultural awareness and responses of their
students.
Equally, some universities may have governors with cultural perceptions at odds with an art school
ethos and even if they don’t set policy in this area, the management structures of these
universities may seek to second guess their responses. In such situations, the interests of the
academic and the purpose of a university education are often the last consideration.
