Hey Sheila,
I agree with Odile. I used to work with a spex freezer mill but now
changed to the retsch mixermill 400 and I am really happy with this. You
can choose whether you use nitrogen or not and if you do you don't need
to feel the machine itself with nitrogen after every run but you just
fill a container where you pre-cool all your samples together. And you
can process 2 samples at once instead of one. But they still are quite
expensive. So maybe you can try to find a second hand, because they are
made for quite a while now. If you buy this one make sure you get
containers with zirconium oxide lining. They are the most expensive ones
but last longest and you should have least problems with inhibition in
further experiments.
Good luck,
Eveline Altena

Dear all
I am emailing on the off chance that somebody may be able to help me. I
am currently looking to purchase some type of Cryogenic Grinder Mill
which would pulverize teeth for ancient DNA analysis. I see in allot of
publications that most people use the SPEX 6770 freezer mill or similar
models, However my budget has been severely reduced this year so I
cannot afford to spend the approximate 5000euro which most SPEX mills
cost. Also it seems that some of the SPEX mills are run on American
voltage and there is no European equivalent.
I was just wondering therefore does anyone use some sort of cheaper
alternative similar to a freezer mill to pulverize teeth or bone
fragments for aDNA analysis.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Best Wishes,
Sheila Tierney
