As we start delving deeper, aren't we finding that many, perhaps most,
of the best features of American health care are publicly financed? You
should do the easy thing, sort yourselves out and extend publicly
financed health care to everyone.
In fact, I'll adopt David W's approach by saying that it will happen,
and telling you now (not in the future) that I told you so...

Dear David,
Thank you for this very comprehensive list of sources of financial
assistant for cancer patients. I would also add that it is often the
case that physicians can connect patients with NIH programs that pay for
treatment. My mother, for instance, never even had to consider whether
Medicare would cover her treatment for muliple-myeloma, because it was
taken care of by an NIH cancer center at the University of Texas Medical
School (she was a Kansas resident, but her oncologist was able to
connect her with a program there).
Best,
Shirley

Just to clarify one point, in 2000 Congress amended the Medicaid law to
permit the states to provide Medicaid coverage for every uninsured woman
in the US under 65 with breast or cervical cancer who is diagnosed
through the national breast and cervical cancer early detection program.
Every state now covers this benefit. It is the only medical benefit
available to all uninsured Americans without income or categorial
eligibility requirements. It is a testimony to the breast cancer lobby,
one of the most powerful in our country. Would that every other
disease, not to mention wellness, had such a powerful lobby,

Victor,
I can't deal with your second point, but on the first, one can only
imagine what we could do to cancer survival rates if we matched our
excellence in screening with the ability to pay for actual treatment. On
mothers day baseball players wear pink ribbons for breast cancer
awareness (not treatment); on fathers day, there is always something
about prostate cancer screening. Every weekend in the spring some group
walks over the brooklyn bridge for various disease awareness campaigns
(and the same thing happens in Central Park). We have perfected how to
get people involved in public health campaigns--we have not figued out a
way to get their treatment paid for as yet
