Epidemiology applies observational methods to study disease natural history
and treatment outcomes in populations. This enables epidemiology to quantify
disease burden and evaluate the impact of GSKs products in the general
population, thereby aiding in the improved treatment of patients and the
advancement of public health worldwide.

This is a key role within the Biostatistics Development Partners group that will
support the Epidemiology function and drug project teams in developing,
embedding and influencing the use of innovative epidemiology related
statistical methodologies as part of the drug development process. The role
will provide consultancy and training to epidemiologists, statisticians and other
customer groups, as appropriate. The role may also involve working in close
collaboration with GSK's statistical research group, the Research Statistics
Unit, to drive forward the implementation of specific projects.

Key responsibilities:
 
- Support epidemiological research and protocol development across a variety
of therapeutic areas by providing expert statistical strategy and advice on
study design.
- Advise on the statistical analyses of epidemiological studies.
- Advise on the use of software tools for analysis especially for complex or
novel methodologies.
- Consult on the interpretation of analyses and support the development of
manuscripts.
- Monitor the statistical and epidemiological literature for new analytical
methods that may offer compelling advantages over existing techniques.
- Contribute to GSK status as leader in the development of epidemiological
methods.
- Interact with regulators and regulatory statisticians on epidemiological
issues.
- Support the Statistical Community in other related areas as needed.

The candidate must have experience as a statistical consultant, have good
leadership and networking skills and be an excellent communicator. Other
attributes include proven influencing and assertiveness skills, credibility in
interactions in the clinical trial matrix and the ability to work internationally.
Experience of supervision, coaching or mentoring would also be an advantage
as would a proven track record of embedding new methodology within the
clinical trial arena.

Basic qualifications required:

MSc/PhD in Statistics or a related subject with proven applicable experience in
statistical consulting within an epidemiology or a related medical environment,
preferably with experience of the pharmaceutical industry. For the director
grade, you will have demonstrated experience developing project strategy
within a cross functional team environment, as well as demonstrated
experience influencing external key opinion leaders and/or senior management.

Preferred qualifications:

Demonstrated abilities in several of the following areas would be advantageous:
- In-depth understanding of methodologic issues relating to longitudinal
observational databases.
- Familiarity with principles of epidemiologic study design as well as analytical
methods used in epidemiologic research.
- Strong statistical skills and the ability to review the statistical and
epidemiological literature to identify appropriate methodology to meet
customer needs.
- Experience analysing observational studies and databases, in addition to
experience of meta-analyses and data-mining.
- Knowledge of Bayesian statistical methods and specifically their application
to the field of epidemiological research.
- Previous experience working closely with epidemiology and health outcomes
specialist teams.
- Experience analysing drug safety data.
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to effectively set priorities and manage conflicting demands in a high
pressure, constantly changing environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills demonstrated in a global
environment.
- Ability to adapt communication styles to best suit the audience.
- A track record of publications and a wide network of industry and/or
academic contacts in the field of health outcomes statistics would also be
considered advantageous.
- Ability to resolve problems through resourceful use of information and
contacts.
- Statistical programming skills in SAS, STATA, SPlus and other packages.

This is a UK position and can be based at Stockley Park or Harlow.
