UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM
School of Cancer Sciences
Senior Systematic Reviewer - Fixed term for 12 months
The Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit (CRCTU) at the University of
Birmingham has a new core-funded position available for an experienced
Systematic Reviewer to lead a programme of systematic reviews and
quantitative meta-analyses, primarily in the field of children’s cancer.
The Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) has a large and varied
portfolio of trials across a range of paediatric tumours, with several new trials
being developed. There are particular challenges related to obtaining reliable
evidence on treatment efficacy in rare diseases and the appointee will be
heavily involved from start to finish of the trial process: at the beginning to
assess the current evidence base and help define the trial questions through
systematic review, and where possible meta-analysis, of previous trials; at the
end of the trial by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis to
include the trial’s results and put them in the context of the other available
evidence.
This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest of the National Cancer
Research Institute Accredited Trials Units in the UK. The Unit is part of the
School of Cancer Sciences which includes the first of Cancer Research UK's
national Cancer Centres. The Unit has an extensive portfolio of phase II and
III clinical trials in a wide range of cancer disease sites. The Unit hosts a team
funded by Leukaemia Research supporting phase II trial development in
haematology, including paediatrics, on a national level.
It is anticipated that the appointee will play a central role in developing and
expanding the CRCTU’s systematic review and meta-analysis capacity. They
will also actively liaise with clinical investigators and other trial personnel
(especially medical statisticians), contributing to the evaluation and
interpretation of clinical trial results and having a key role in the presentation
and publication of results. As academic members of the University, Systematic
Reviewers contribute to teaching at under-graduate and post-graduate level.
In addition the Unit is actively involved in researching methodology related to
clinical trials, including meta-analysis, and is closely affiliated with the new
Midland Hub for Trials Methodology Research funded by the Medical Research
Council. Opportunities will exist for the appointee to pursue their own
research, especially on methodology for evidence synthesis and evaluation in
rare diseases. Registration for a post-graduate qualification may be possible.
