Hi there
I'm currently reviewing all alt tags on www.disabilityartsonline.org.uk. In
the past, the site's been developed pretty much as a one person concern;
it's grown slowly, with little in the way of online editing skills to call
on to make sure it adheres to good practice.
Now I'm reviewing all that, and I'm keen to get some sense of where the
sector stands in terms of some of the 'givens' that we all seem to take for
granted when it comes to accessibility.
My query today is about Alt tags. Both Firefox 3.5 and IE 8 don't, by
default, show alt tags when you mouse over images with them. What do people
on the list think about this? Do we have some users of assistive technology
on list who can offer some new guidance about alt tag good practice in the
light of these new browser versions?
Incidentally, I'm not seeking to ignite a browser war string here - the
reality of our situation as public sector publishers is that we need to
cater for all browser users. At the moment, 48% of our users are on
[versions of] IE, 35% on Firefox, 11% on Safari, and the rest on all sorts
of things like Chrome - 3%.
