Hi Charles,
I am not entirely sure I understand who you are suggesting as the poser of the three questions. However, given that until 1973 homosexuality was positioned as a mental disorder by DSM II, is it worth imagining some answers to the following questions in 1972 (and extrapolating to today?):
Q: Why do so many clinicians, who work in HEALTH, speak so pejoratively about the positioning of homosexuality as a mental disorder?
A: because homosexuality is not a mental disorder
Q: Are those who question whether homosexuality is a mental disorder appropriate clinicians to be working in CAMHS?
A: Yes, or at least as appropraite as those who erroneously and oppressively unquestioningly accept that homosexuality is a mental disorder
Q: Would you dispute the existence of your illness if you were admitted to hospital with motor-neuron disease, diabetes or cancer (as you do with the existence of homosexuality as an illness)?
A: No (but I would continue to dispute the existence of my illness as female hysteria if admitted to a clinic)
More radically one could argue about that a voodoo curse "really exists as illness" in so far as it has real effects (including pain, illness and death) for those who are caught up in the rituals, discourses, practices etc which socially construct cursing and being cursed and that you will accept that ADHD "really exists as an illness" if they will exist that voodoo curse "really exists as an illness".

Subject: Physical illness and Mental illness
Hi all,
I debate has developed within our service regarding ADHD (again) and I felt compelled to respond. The main points in the debate appear to be:
1) Why do so many clinicians, who work in HEALTH, speak so pejoratively about the most researched disorder in CAMHS?
2) Are those, who question ADHD as a valid disorder, appropriate clinicians to be working in CAMHS?
3) Would you dispute the existence of your illness if you or a relative were admitted to hospital with motor-neuron disease, diabetes or cancer?
I was hoping to provide a response to each of the points. I'm emailing for some direction on the last point - does anyone on the list have any journal articles that might help me clarify this as I'm not doing so well at coming up with a response?
Thanks
Charles
