Hi Zach,
Googling "No protocol specified" suggest this is a
general issue to do with any software talking to an x server, and may
be caused by various different things, such as security issues, etc,
all to do with the local setup of your machine rather than PERIOD
itself. Plotting on "xwin" works OK for me. I would recommend looking
through the Google hits for "No protocol specified" to see if any of
them relate to your situation (one I saw said that it was fixed simply
by rebooting the machine).
