Depends what you are interested in:
If you want the total brain volume you can probably get a rough estimate
with the segemt function.
Segment your anatomical image into GM and WM. Afterwards go into matlab
and select your GM and WM mask:
GM = spm_read_vols(spm_vol(spm_select(1,'image')));
WM = spm_read_vols(spm_vol(spm_select(1,'image')));
BrainMask = GM+WM;
Now select a threshold (e.g. 0.7) and find all the voxels:
x = length(find(BrainMask<0.7));
Last step, calculate the actual volume: x * VoxelDimX * VoxelDimY *
VoxelDimZ
If you are interested in teh total intracranial volume, you might as
well add the CSF volume fraction from Segment as well.
