Infed.org is an open, independent and not-for-profit site exploring informal
education, lifelong learning and social action. It is used by just over 2
million people a year (around 30 per cent of whom are in the UK; 40 per cent
in north America). A large proportion of users are students and academics.
We are looking for people to write pieces for social action/community
development strands of the site and wondered either if members of this list
could help or could suggest potential writers.
At the moment we need some pieces that combine a brief biography and
overview of particular individuals with an exploration of a key idea or
ideas associated with them. We are particular interested in the following:
William Beveridge and social evil
The Rowntrees and social research
Charles Booth and mapping poverty
Samuel Smiles and self help
Oscar Newman and defensible space (we already have pieces on Richard Sennett
and Jane Jacobs in the works)
We’d also like contributions on the ideas of:
Social action (there is a short piece already but it is not adequate)
Social housing (there is material dotted about the site – but we need a much
stronger focus)
Social entrepreneurship (again there is material on entrepreneurialism but
we need an exploration of this area of endeavour).
Social policy
We are also open to suggestions.
We are part of the new British Library archiving project and a number of the
pages are included on the UNESCO/NCVER voced database and on SOSIG (the
Social Science Information Gateway). Over 1100 sites link to us (including
the BBC, Channel 4, The Guardian and various educational institutions - for
example: Harvard, MIT, and the Open University).
The site is run completely by volunteers based in the UK.
Thanks
