Disappointment at the Clinic
At Rosy's Balloons a Go Go, Templestowe,
the helium-filled balloons were ready
in three big black plastic bags.
She said: in this gale, they'd blow you up and away
if I hadn't weighed them down with waterbags,
now squeeze them carefully in the back of your car.
They loomed large behind me as I drove,
blocking my rear vision. Reaching home
I snuck them into the front bedroom
drove off urgently to Cheesecake Heaven.
The cake was inscribed Happy Birthday
Vanya (the therapy dog)*, not
that he would be allowed mud-cake himself.
So the afternoon passed: speech therapy kids
celebrating, helping blow out the four candles,
posing for the video with Vanya,
each child taking home a balloon.
Many were left over, for the next days' children.
BUT before bedtime those balloons not taken
had begun to sink, slouch and drift,
four clustered at the heating system's
intake grille. By morning, all on the floor,
herding like cartoon sheep. Given the gale
I've pondered releasing them from upstairs -
they have so little lift, they'd snag nearby.
Out the back door! stand over them with scissors,
stab them one by one. Phht, finito. Into the bin.
