I don't know if David Key is on this outdoor research list, but his
PhD was on this topic. He made a presentation about it when the
outdoor education research forum met at Edinburgh University a few
years ago. As far as I recall, it was mostly an account/exploration
of his own experience of such a phenomenon when climbing in the
Yosemite. A very different kind of PhD - absolutely fascinating in
content and methodology.
