I want to position myself close to Andrew on this.
There are also plenty of similar reported experiences in the annals of warfare (the Angles of Mons perhaps being one of the more well known occurrences). Another quite well known example was the tired, lost and frightened pilot caught in a storm who was guided safely to ground by a phantom plane. In all these cases there were two common factors i) the intensity of the situation ii) severe lack of sleep on the part of participants.

Subject: Re: The Third Man Factor
It is worth considering whether this phenomena is related to famous
individuals performing heroic deeds, or whether these are just famous
instances of something rather ordinary.
I recall on 24 hour orienteering events in the wee small hours of the
morning feeling there was someone with me. I am neither famous nor
heroic, so that rules those out as factors. I am more towards the non-
entity / cowardly end of the spectrum. I think what I experienced was
rather prosaic - sleep deficit.
