Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Dyslexia Advice
I have been approached by a doctor who has been diagnosed as having dyslexia and as a result is not achieving targets despite getting through medical school. Does anyone have any experience of support that could be provided given the unique difficulties? This doctor manages the work through a process of methodically rechecking work done but is criticized for being slow. They have spoken to Access to Work who I am told were little help plus a number of dyslexia support groups, one of which was insensitive to send a questionnaire that frightened me, but does not feel she has had any success to date. I found the access to work enquiry disappointing as I have experience of them providing help in the form of assistants which would be great in this case. I guess this doctor is wanting to discuss their position further with doctors in similar positions (if there are any) to see how they cope. Apologies for keeping this very brief but they are concerned about being 'identified'. Meetings are imminent with their alleged professional educational support who laughed when first told of the issue so currently it is a case of watch this space. I was very pleased that the BMA recommended that the case was brought to OH. Any advice would be gratefully accepted as this doctor feels quite alone at the moment.
Regards
Frank
