We have just been asked to emphasise the need for vulnerable staff (i.e.
with known medical conditions - Heart, respiratory, immuno-suppressed
etc.) to contact their GP to get the pneumoccal vaccine.
We do not give the vaccine, just highlight the consideration of need to
staff. There is enough to do in the NHS without adding to the workload!

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Pneumococcal vaccine- pandemic flu planning
I have been working with our HR colleagues on NHS Workforce Assurance
process & risk Analysis for the pandemic flu.
We have been asked by the SHA to provide information about the
pneumococcal vaccine. The question is as follows
Is the Trust able to monitor and encourage the uptake of pneumococcal
vaccine by staff deemed to be at particular risk of pneumococcal
infection?
Subquestion is
Are high levels of coverage routinely achieved?
I have to say I was totally stumped when I saw this. Not sure if I must
have
been living in the dark as far as this vaccine is concerned, but I
thought it was
given to the elderly and by their own GP. It would seem to me that there
is
still a risk at any time of the year even without pandemic, so I am not
sure
why this has now been raised!!!!
Any comments or experiences would be much much appreciated.......
Sue
