I don't know of any direct evidence for firesetting in south-west England,
but it may have occurred. Sandy Gerrard in the Early British Tin Industry
(Tempus, 2000) suggests that some of the reservoirs associated with tin
openworks were for taking water to firesetting operations. My own view is
that this is unlikely and that the reservoirs were primarily for sluicing
waste material or for providing a stream of water in which ore could be
washed/vanned.
