Yes, agreed.
I didn't mean to imply a view for or against - just wanted to note that we can't dismiss the amounts of money as being 'small'.
I agree very strongly that we need to understand the 'economics' (I use that word carefully because, as Nick notes, this is fuzzier than simply the act of money changing hands) of this space much better than we appear to. It's not clear to me how we do that across the board but some real-world case-studies would certainly seem to help.

but we're also assuming that breach of copyright leads directly to
lost revenue, a matter of contention being explored heavily in the
music industry and leading directly to the concept of 'free music'
giveaways at concerts and such.
has anyone done any research into the true size of the commercial
market for copyrighted historical images?
