The Open University is about to advertise 'Charter Studentships' to celebrate its 40th birthday. One of them will be
available for the study of Renaissance cardinals. The deadline for applications is tight - 17th July - so I am
sending round the details slightly in advance of their being fully available through the OU website.
Application packs are already available and further details will appear here:

Renaissance cardinals
On the basis of her recently published book (Reclaiming Rome: Cardinals in the Fifteenth Century, E.J.Brill 2009),
Carol Richardson would welcome the opportunity to supervise a student working in a related area. The book considers
cardinals' patronage from c.1380 up to the pontificate of Sixtus IV (1471-84) and argues that their relationship
with the popes and with Rome was a defining feature of the period. Her next early modern project will focus on the
cardinals at the end of the fifteenth century, during the pontificates of Sixtus IV, Innocent VIII and Alexander VI.
A successful student will select either an individual cardinal and trace their cultural and artistic connections or
a topic which will allow them to explore papal patronage in the early modern period. As the student will be
co-supervised by Dr Kim Woods (http://www.open.ac.uk/Arts/arthistory/woods.htm), an expert on sculpture and on
northern European art and cultural networks, they will be encouraged to consider these aspects of their topic,
perhaps, for example, by choosing to examine a non-Italian cardinal and their activities both in and beyond Rome.
The successful candidate will have a historical or art historical background in the early modern period. They will
have enough Latin and Italian to navigate archives in Rome - and/or a desire to improve - as well as other languages
necessary for their topic. They will be able to dedicate the time necessary to undertake archival research abroad,
if necessary, and will be encouraged to apply for scholarships (e.g. British School at Rome) during the tenure of
the studentship to enable them to do this.

Please note that full-time PhD students at the OU are normally resident locally (in Milton Keynes) but permission is
usually given to live close by or where there are good research facilities, for example in London, Oxford or
Cambridge - or indeed Rome!
