The following vacancy at the Centre for e-Research, King's College
London, may be of interest to some members of this list
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Software Development Manager
The Centre for e-Research at King’s College London is seeking to
appoint a Software Development Manager to lead its Software
Development team, which carries out architectural, design and
development work for a variety of projects, both College- and
externally-funded, in the fields of digital libraries, digital
repositories and research infrastructures. The post is open-ended (not
fixed term).
A particular focus of the Centre’s activities is developing innovative
systems to support the research activities of research groups in a
variety of arts, humanities and scientific disciplines across the
College. For example, projects that have recently started include
collaborations with textual scholars developing digital (XML-based)
editions of manuscripts and documents, and biomedical researchers who
want to capture and analyse experimental workflows. These projects
also frequently involve digital repositories (specifically Fedora –
http://www.fedora-commons.org/), and a key interest is the use of such
technologies for research data management.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will manage a team of software architects,
designers and developers, each of whom will typically be working on a
number of different projects at any one time. Currently there are four
team members, some of them part of the core staff, others employed on
a fixed-term basis that is dependent on income from project funding.
Managing the team will involve:
* Planning the overall activities of the team, and coordinating
resources, deliverables and deadlines.
* Monitoring and reporting on progress to the Deputy Director.
* Ensuring that project outputs are delivered according to schedule.
* Ensuring that software and systems are produced in accordance
with agreed specifications.
* Quality control of team members’ work, e.g. through code reviews.
A key part of the role will be to ensure the coherence of the
architecture, development and procedures across the Centre’s several
projects, and to facilitate their interaction with the wider digital
infrastructure of the university, including learning technologies
(such as VLEs) and portal environments.
In addition, the post holder will be positively encouraged to develop
their own interests, and will be expected to keep abreast of advances
and trends in technologies and standards, and to seek opportunities
for further projects, for example by writing and submitting proposals
to funding bodies. Thus management does not preclude the liberty to
develop innovative software of one’s own, so long as it is within the
scope of the Centre’s activities and driven by the needs of our users.
The successful applicant will be a graduate with a relevant degree or
equivalent (either computing science or with significant IT
component). Expertise in Java, web service technologies, XML and
database technologies is essential. You must have experience of
managing a team and coordinating resources, be thorough and
methodical, and able to work independently to tight deadlines.
Salary will be within the Grades 7 scale, currently £39,974 to £47,253
per annum (inclusive of London Allowance) depending on skills and
experience. Benefits include 27 days annual leave, an annual season
ticket loan scheme, a final salary superannuation scheme and a
subsidised gym.
