Dear Jon,
We have several medallions from Vesuvius in our collections. They are dated April 1820, 1834 and 1871. One medallion is stamped with an image of Galileo and dated 1879.
We also hold a square tablet stamped with [S]ALVATOR MADONNA 1844 (though the 'S' is missing on our specimen), I guess this must have been a very popular souvenir of the time. As well as the medallions, we also have two specimens with embedded copper coins.
I hope this information is of use, please let me know if you require any images.
Regards
Andrew

Subject: stamped lava 'medallions'
Dear All,
I've received an enquiry concerning souvenir 'medallions' stamped out of freshly erupted lava. We have a couple of these in the Warwickshire collection, from 19th century eruptions of Vesuvius. I'd be grateful for information on any relevant research, collections, or articles.
With thanks
Jon
