We have four lava medallions, the oldest is dated 1802 and the most
recent 1879, although one of the undated ones is thought to have been
made in 1880s. We know very little about them they have the following
captions. Vr 1802 Vesuvio, Magoio 1855 (with flower logo), Govioni
(undated) and Regina Victoria 1879. Ours were acquired from the
Wellcome institute in 1981. Before that they were bought by the
Wellcome History of Medicine Museum in 1925, except the 1802 one which
was purchased later in 1931. All were auctioned by Stevens in London,
but there is no indication of who the original collectors were as they
were tourist souvenirs.
Best wishes
Wendy

Subject: stamped lava 'medallions'
Dear All,
I've received an enquiry concerning souvenir 'medallions' stamped out of
freshly erupted lava. We have a couple of these in the Warwickshire
collection, from 19th century eruptions of Vesuvius. I'd be grateful for
information on any relevant research, collections, or articles.
With thanks
Jon
