Child Language Seminar

City University London

24th and 25th June 2010

The Department of Language and Communication Science at City University
London is delighted to be hosting the Child Language Seminar (CLS) in June
2010. The CLS is an interdisciplinary conference attracting a diverse
audience of, among others, psychologists, linguists and speech and language
therapists, and provides a forum for research on first and second language
acquisition in typically and atypically developing children. Keynote
speakers include Susan Gathercole Ann Senghas and Simon Fisher.

Proposals are invited for papers and posters related to child language
acquisition and disorders. Proposals will be considered on any aspect of
children’s first or subsequent language development (e.g., grammar,
phonology, lexicon, pragmatics, discourse, literacy, bilingualism, sign
language, psycholinguistic processing) or on any aspect relating to children
with language difficulties (e.g., description, assessment, remediation).

The deadline for submissions is 31st December 2009. The CLS is a
peer-reviewed research conference, and the organising committee is chaired
by Dr Nicola Botting, Professor Shula Chiat, and Dr Chloë Marshall. For
further details of the format for submissions, and further details of the
conference, please see:

Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 01-Jul-2009

Meeting Description:

While research on borderlands is well-established in the social sciences, it
is
only within recent years that interest in such regions as sites of
particular
relevance has taken hold within the fields of sociolinguistics and the
sociology
of language. Findings from studies on the relationships between and
interdependence of language, borders and identities are of great value for
many
other disciplines within the social sciences - anthropology, human
geography,
and political science, among others. In the same way, the insights from
social
scientific research in border areas provide sociolinguists with challenging
new
theoretical frameworks within which to situate empirical evidence revealing
the
exact nature of the role language plays in identity-making and -marking in
sites
where identity is fluid, complex and emergent in social interaction.

The Borders and Identities Conference (BIC2010) has two aims: 1) to
demonstrate
our current state of knowledge in this fast-developing area of
sociolinguistic
inquiry, and 2) to provide an interdisciplinary perspective in order that
the
results of recent sociolinguistic studies on the topic can be contextualised
in
broader social scientific discourse. Our principal objective in organising
the
meeting is to foster new collaborative research initiatives by bringing
together
scholars in allied disciplines, with a view to extending and refining our
understanding of the language-identity nexus in regions where in-group and
out-
group categorisations may be problematic, or at least more salient than
elsewhere.

Keynote Addresses:

Dave Britain (Essex) 'Where North meets South: Contact, Divergence, and the
Routinisation of the Fenland Dialect Boundary'
Nik Coupland (Cardiff) 'Where does Welsh Begin and End? Ideological Boundary

Disputes in the Revitalisation of a Minority Language'

Borders'

Description:

Multimodal Reminders in the Home

3.5 year PhD studentship at the School of Informatics, University of
Edinburgh

The project will investigate the effects of aging and hearing loss on the
usability and intelligibility of auditory reminders in the home environment.
Speech and non-speech audio reminders will be compared systematically under
a
variety of realistic conditions. Experiments will be based on a dual-task
paradigm, where participants perform a distractor task while attending to
and/or
acting on auditory reminders.

The project is a collaboration with the Department of Computer Science,
Glasgow
(Prof. Brewster, Dr. McGee-Lennon), and the Department of Speech and Hearing
Sciences, Queen Margaret University (Pauline Campbell, Christine DePlacido).
The
successful candidate will be working closely with a PhD candidate at Glasgow
who
will be specialising in multimodal reminders, in particular tactile and
olfactory reminders. Both candidates will collaborate on a pilot reminder
system
that will be trialled in users' homes.

This project would suit candidates from a variety of backgrounds, including
human-computer interaction, speech science, audiology, medical physics,
rehabilitation engineering, ergonomics, phonetics, or cognitive psychology.

All applicants should have completed their first degree before taking up the
post. Applicants should have at least basic programming skills (at least one
of
Java, C++, Python). Skills in experimental design and statistics are highly
desirable. Familiarity with software such as SPSS, matlab, or R is a bonus.
Applicants should also be open to qualitative approaches to research.

The position is fully funded for 3.5 years through a stipend from the UK
Engineering Physical Sciences and Research Council. The stipend is currently
around £12900 per annum. In addition, fees for UK and European students are
covered.

The School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, came top in the last UK
Research Assessment Exercise. The School offers a wide range of support and
courses for post-graduate students. For further information about the Centre
for

University or Organization: University of Pennsylvania
Department: Linguistics Laboratory
Job Location: Pennsylvania, USA
Web Address: http://www.ling.upenn.edu/linglab/
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Phonology; Sociolinguistics

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

Post-doc at the Linguistics Laboratory, University of Pennsylvania for a
sociophonetic study of sound change, developing automatic alignment of wave
forms with phonemic boundaries and automatic analysis of formant values.
The project is a joint undertaking of the Linguistics and Phonetics Labs
under the direction of W. Labov and J. Yuan. A central goal of the project
is to advance the state of the art of phonetic analysis of spontaneous
speech, using forced alignment and automatic formant measurement to
increase the size of data sets by several orders of magnitude. The tasks of
the position include the systematic analysis and reduction of errors from
various sources. The candidate should have a strong background in acoustic
phonetics, programming and statistical measures, preferentially familiarity
with python and PRAAT scripting.

The research project is centered upon a very large data base of recorded
interviews in the city of Philadelphia, carried out in successive years
from 1973 to 2008. A second goal of the project is to apply the analytic
techniques of the project to tracing sound change in progress across real
time and across the various social and ethnic groups studied. The
responsibilities of the position includes the supervision and training of
transcribers as well as multivariate analysis of the output measures. The
candidate should have some familiarity with sociophonetic studies of
linguistic changes in progress.

It is expected that the research will lead to results of interest in both
the technical and linguistic domains. The candidate will in part define the
parameters of the position by the direction of his or her major interest.

Appointment is for one year, beginning in fall term 2009, with the
possibility of continuation for a second year. Salary is $37,000. Send CV,
statement of research interests with any relevant research reports, and
names of three references to W. Labov at the email address listed below.
